Do You Get Enough Sleep?

Adults should get between 7 and 9 hours of quality sleep every night. Yet, according to The Sleep Council, the average person gets just 6.5 hours of sleep.

Many of us are consistently missing out on important sleep. Poor sleep, or a lack of sleep, can cause many potential health issues. Problems that you might face, whether you realise it or not, include an increased risk of heart conditions, as well as low moods and depression, a lower sex drive, and a higher risk of obesity.

How Can You Tell If You're Getting The Right Amount Of Sleep?

Aim to sleep for between 7 and 9 hours each night. Learn to trust your body, and recognise your energy levels. Tiredness isn't always a sign that you don't get enough sleep. It's important to make sure that you're properly hydrated, as dehydration can also make you feel lethargic.

If you fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow, there's a good chance that you don't get enough sleep. You should fall asleep after roughly five minutes, but ideally not straight away. If you fall asleep as soon as you're in bed, this is a sign that you're too tired.

You can use an app to monitor your sleep, but remember that they're not always accurate. A Fitbit or other fitness wearable may provide you with more accurate data you can use.

How Can You Improve Your Sleep Quality?

Many things affect our quality of sleep. Some, we can control. Others, we can't control easily.

Children

Parents often suffer from a lack of sleep because their children wake during the night. It's important to develop good sleeping habits for your children as well as yourself. School-aged children should be sleeping for between 9 and 12 hours per day, with younger children at the higher end of this range. If you get their sleep right, you should have time to catch up on yours!

Devices

Don't use devices, such as phones and tablets, right before you go to sleep. It's best to keep your phone out of your room, to avoid the temptation to use it. This also reduces the risk that you'll be woken by Whatsapp notifications! It's worth investigating in a stand-alone alarm clock, rather than using your phone.

Beds

It's important to have a good bed, along with good quality bedding. Buy the biggest bed you can fit into your room, and invest in a quality mattress. Mattresses don't come as a one-size-fits-all solution - you'll need to find out which firmness suits you best, and might want to try before you buy. The same applies to pillows, with different people needing different types and amounts. Noise, Light and Temperature
